Jonathan Keilback, a local musician in the Pittsburgh metal scene known from his current band Only Flesh, as well as The Existential Gentlemen, has joined with Zach Fehl, the former station manager of 91.9 WCAL in California PA and current writer for, to build the network over the last year.

“Over the last few months it has been very encouraging to see the reactions from the local music and arts communities regarding what we’re doing with The Metal Edge. Pittsburgh is a very unique city, with a rich history and diverse peoples, and I think that it is important to be able to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the local metal scene.” Zach said in regards to the excitement felt in leading into the station’s launch.

Keilback explained that, “The platform The River’s Edge Radio Network has built up over the past several years has been a great asset to Pittsburgh entertainment, and with the swath of intense, heavy bands in the region, the need to launch The Metal Edge was a no-brainer.”

Keilback was referring to the growing metal scene in the city which has recently been rated the third largest per capita in the United States with over 600 bands per 100,000 people according to the Encyclopedia Metallum. Powered with this information, Keilback and Fehl worked with The River’s Edge organization to launch the station which will feature the heavier side of Pittsburgh’s music scene.

Metal bands in Pittsburgh have been eagerly signing up to be streamed on the new 24 hour station including Klaymore and Greywalker. Greywalker was recently voted the best metal band in Pittsburgh in a City Paper voting contest. When asked about the impact of a metal station in Pittsburgh Lee Prisby of Klaymore said "Metal is an often overshadowed genre in terms of radio play. I am glad to see The River's Edge expanding to shine some much needed spotlight on our city's diverse metal scene with The Metal Edge when most media tends to shy away from it."

When asked how he felt about the coming station, Greywalker member Joey Solak said, “Pittsburgh has a lot of great metal bands, and knowing that there is an only local metal station to showcase that gives me pride in the scene I’m a part of.”
